Pak Urdu Media Digest -May 14

There are numerous reports of parties in Sindh protesting against election results in the province, especially in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jamshero and Jacobabad. Most of the reports are about rigging by MQM and demand re-elections in Karachi. JeM is busy promoting ‘Al Murabitun’ as if it is another front for JeM, says some reports.

CHINA
1. Chinese PM will be visiting Pakistan from May 22nd.  (Jang, Urdupoint)

INDIA
  1.Some sections consider Nawaz Sharif’s invitation to the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to attend his oath-taking ceremony as improper considering the current relations between the two nations. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

2.AJK President Sardar Yaqoob Khan while Nawaz Sharif desire for better ties with India, says that the PML-N leader should remember that the present Indian premier is weak and is therefore no major decision could be expected from him. He said that Kashmir isa major issue between India and Pakistan and once it is resolve; other issues like water, Sir Creek, Siachen and trade will be solved automatically. (Roznama Duniya)

3. Sarim Burney, Chief of Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International, has condemned the killing of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah in an Indian jail; he said that this is a gross violation of human rights. (Ummat)

4. Indian General (Retd.) JK Shankar Daliya, talking to ‘Jang’ from Simla, said that Nawaz Sharif was a brave man and that under his rule, Pakistan’s relations with India will improve. (Jang)

5. Nawa-i-Waqt edit on Nawaz’s overtures to India, cautions that a one-sided friendship with India would cost Nawaz dearly. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

UNITED STATES/AFGHANISTAN
1.  Jang editorial says Pakistan’s new PM will face many serious challenges in fighting terrorism and dealing with Afghanistan, and the US and peace with India. Kashmir is the main issue between India and Pakistan; Nawaz Sharif has claimed that the issue had almost reached the point of settlement during his last tenure and he would finalize the process now.  (Jang Edit)

2. Daily Pak edit that relations with India and Afghanistan, economy, electricity crises, corruption and terrorism were some of important issues that the new government should address on a priority basis. It adds people have expressed their trust in the new leadership and hence it was obligatory on the new government to live up to their expectations. (Daily Pak Edit)

3. Ummat edit on the poll results says PML-N is not the US’s choice but in the current situation, in which Turkey, Saudi Arabai and other Muslim countries have a soft corner for PML-N, America will not dare to annoy this large section of the Muslim world. It hopes that the Army leadership cooperates with Sharif, and welcomes Sharif’s statement that human beings have to learn from these mistakes. (Ummat Edit)

DEFENCE
1. Incoming PM Nawaz Sharif said that they will resolve all challenges faced by Pakistan with the help of Pakistan’s defence forces. (Khabrain)

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan’s Joint Military Committee meeting was held in which both countries’ top military officials participated. Saudi’s Armed Force’s chief of General Staff Gen. Hussain bin Abdullah Al Qabil welcomed the Pakistani delegation. The Pakistan delegation was headed by Lt. Gen. Mohammad Asif. (Urdupoint, Roznama Duniya)

TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
1. LeJ spokesperson Abubakar Siddiq, calling from an undisclosed location, accepted LeJ’s responsibility for attack on IGP Mushtaq Sukhera’s house. He warned that if missing persons were not released, security officers’ relatives will be abducted and their dead bodies will be thrown into the streets. (Jang)

2. Roznama Dunya edit on the attack on IGP Sukhera’s house warns that if immediate steps are not be taken, terrorists will get stronger again. It urges PML-N to pay special attention to improving the situation in Balochistan. (Roznama Dunya Edit)

3.Writing on the student convention held in Karachi under the aegis of ‘Al Murabitun’, Kamran Talib says JeM commander, Mufti Abdul Rauf, and Maulana Qasim, the administrator of ‘Al Murabitun’  spoke on Jihad and advised students to participate in Dawra-e-Tafsir-e-ayaat-e-Jihad (session of Quranic verses about jihad), and   fight against biases and divisions in the name of communities  Qasmi said that while acquiring education, students should try to create awareness of the emotion of jihad and to try to take out Muslims from decline. POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
1.  Sources have revealed the probability of the appointment of Mehmood Khan Achakzai as tbe NA Speaker, Gen. (Retd.) Abdul Qader Baloch as the Interior Minister, Ishaq Dar as tbe Finance Minister and Sartaj Aziz as the Advisor for Foreign Affairs.  Ahsan Iqbal may be appointed as the Minister for Water and Electricity. Punjab Forum President Baig Raj said that MQM Chief Altaf Hussain was working on an external agenda to spread terrorism in Pakistan. Hussain was directly involved in many serious cases and did not let go any chance to spread hatred. Raj said that MQM’s reality would have been disclosed if people had been given protection in the elections. (Baad-e-Shimal)

2.Former PM Gilani announced his resignation as PPP Senior Vice Chairman post at a press conference. He admitted he was resigning as he had n Punjab Forum President Baig Raj said that MQM Chief Altaf Hussain was working on an external agenda to spread terrorism in Pakistan. Hussain was directly involved in many serious cases and did not let go any chance to spread hatred. 3.Sardar Qayyum Jatoi has announced that he is leaving PPP. (Khabrain)London police has received 12,000 complaints against Altaf Hussain including his latest address threatening the separation of Karachi from the rest of Pakistan. 8000 of these complaints are from Sindh. (Awami Awaz)

4. FIR has been registered against medical college professor Anwarul Haq for tearing Musharraf’s portraits and for using unparliamentarily language against locals on their protest. (Roznama Duniya)

5. A special report by Shakeel Naek says that even before the election process was over, MQM was extremely concerned as Nawaz Sharif seemed to be displaying a tough stance, as evidenced by his election address a week before the polls, saying that regardless of whether or not he gets the votes in Karachi, if he comes into power, he will see to it that all the militant wings of political parties are shut down. The report says now that Nawaz Sharif has come in power, MQM fears that first that he will do is he will change the Governor of Sindh who has been in office ever since 2002. Naek adds that Nawaz Sharif has already exposed in 1992 during army operations that MQM runs torture cells and he had also cracked down against MQM in 1992.  (Awami Awaz)

6. In his column, Zafar Iqbal urges Imran Khan to play the role of opposition in the federal government, instead of joining the PML-N coalition. He writes that PTI’s image is that of a modern party which wants to convert the nation to a ‘New Pakistan’; hence, Khan should not hurt his political image by joining a traditional type of government. 7. Asif Jelani writes that the poll would be remembered for being disappointing to the youth who were impatient for change in the form of Imran Khan. He states that though PTI was popular in urban areas, it wasn’t as popular in rural areas. He writes that as long as the feudal and ‘wadera’ systems are active in Pakistan, PTI would not have much hope. (Kawish)

9. Jasarat writes that despite EC’s claims of free and fair election, reports are coming in of irregularities and rigging from various parts of the country. Edit says that most of the defeated parties have accepted the results. Edit writes that JI, PTI, PPP, Mohajir Quami Movement, JUI, Sunni Ittehad Council, Sunni Tehrik and MWM have alleged that MQM had control over polling stations in Karachi and rigged the election. Edit writes that the people of Karachi wanted to get rid of the fascist organization but they were not allowed to cast their votes. (Jasarat Edit)

10. Columnist Arif Bahar says PPP saved its Sindh fort, it has been moved on the national scene along with the ANP, which has yielded its turf to PTI in KP but if one thinks that both parties have been eliminated forever, it will be a mistake. He is clear that both PPP and ANP would bounce back learning from their mistakes and cashing in on the failures of their rivals. He criticises that MQM used force to rig elections in Karachi and in its other strongholds of Sindh. It has won the election but lost morally with none ready to accept its victory.  (Jasarat)

11. Nazir Naji, while giving equal credit to President Zardari and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif for the democratic transition, writes that Imran Khan introduced a new ideology and attracted the country’s youth but Shahbaz Sharf’s taking timely steps diverted majority of Imran’s young fans to vote for his party. He urges Nawaz Sharif to pay attention to smaller provinces in order to avoid 1970-like situation. Naji recalls that before 2008 elections, at a media interaction he had predicted that Nawaz would not be become PM then an, his coming to power would become inevitable when the US quit Afghanistan. KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWAH (NWFP/FATA)
1. Political one-upmanship continues to dog the selection of a ruling party in KP. Both PTI and JUI-F are flexing their muscles to try and form the government. PTI has announced the name of Pervez Khatak its choice for Chief Minister. JUI-F has announced Lutfur Rehman’s name for the post. Jamaat-e-Islami has announced its support for PTI. According to JI spokesman Israrullah Advocate, the decision to back PTI was taken by its administrative committee. In Lahore, Shahbaz Sharif said that PTI should get the opportunity to form the government in KP. He said that differences that crept up during elections should be forgotten, and we should work together for a prosperous, sovereign and dignified Pakistan. (Jinnah)

2. JI has decided to from government with PTI in KP. PTI has nominated Parvez Khatak for Chief Minister’s post. (Urdupoint)

3. Jang edit says though PTI has won majority votes in KP, it is not in a position to form government alone; hence, it will need support from other parties. Edit says various parties are in touch with PTI over forming the government. (Jang Edit)

SINDH
1. At a meeting presided over by Zardari, PPP has decided to from government in Sindh with MQM. (Roznama Duniya)
2. Naseer Memon writes that Sindh is the last stronghold of PPP but the party should remember that Sindhis will not remain naïve eternally nor will the stop considering alternatives and so PPP should review and improve itself. (Kawish)
3. JI will stage a demonstration today at Mazar-e-Qaid against rigging of elections in Karachi, the failure of the Election Commission and the EC allegedly giving a free hand to MQM. At this protest, JI (Karachi) Chief Muhammad Hussain Mehnati and other JI leaders will address the people. (Jasarat)
4. Out of 21 parties, 19 had demanded that Army be deployed at Karachi’s polling stations, but the Army was kept in the streets and this decision was taken by the EC, not the Army. Since the election staff in Karachi comprised of MQM loyalists, despite media and social media’s claims of irregularities, the Army, the Rangers and FC did not react as the Army’s position was of Quick Reaction Force. The Deputy Commissioner and returning officials had the power to call in the Army. The EC’s role was also questionable in Balochistan and Punjab where results were changed before being declared. BALOCHISTAN
1. Caretaker CM Nawab Barozai has said that everyone knows that the banned organizations are internally interconnected. Terrorists have no religion, they kill unarmed, innocent people, and are serving no one, he said. He claimed that by facing cowards who attack from behind and the unknown enemy, security forces have been doing yeomen services to the community and nation. He also said that elections have been fair by and large. Some win and some lose. (Daily Intekhab)

2. Caretaker CM Ghaus Baksh Barozai has admitted to poll rigging in some areas in Balochistan. (Khabrain)

3. The Central Spokesperson of Baloch National Movement has said that the Baloch people have totally rejected the elections and the Election Commission. He said that the Baloch people are striving to attain their goal very bravely, and are offering their lives for the purpose, and the people will have to continue in the direction with full awareness. 4. Pakhtunkhwah Mili Awami Party and PML-N are likely to from government in Balochistan. (Roznama Duniya)
 
POK/ G-B NEWS
1. Chaudhary Azim Baksh has been appointed as the additional Secretary Information in AJK PML-N.

2.  Some unidentified persons assassinated All Parties’ National Alliance (APNA) chairman and J&K National Liberation Conference (NLC) central President Arif Shahid in Rawalpindi. (Daily Dharti)

3. Bang-e-Sahar edit says that with PML-N coming back to power in Pakistan, the political situation in Gilgit Baltistan was getting tense with Hafizur Rahman talking aggressively against the Mehdi Shah local Government. People were fed up with the bad governance   and hence everyone wanted a change. Edit says that nothing remarkable was done during the past three years. Edit says that if Mehdi Shah wanted to complete his term he should change the entire scenario or else it would not be difficult for the opposition to snatch power from him. (Bang-e-Sahar Edit)

4. Baad-e-Shimal welcomes the plans of PML-N Baltistan Chief and former Deputy Chief Executive Fida Nashad to meet PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif and secure constitutional status for Gilgit-Baltistan. Edit says that it would be a great thing for the new PML-N government to allow the provincial government to complete its term and strengthen the new setup by making necessary amendments. 5. Baad-e-Shimal asks the GB Government to ensure standard education for all students in the province. These are many private schools in GB which are not following the govt syllabus. Edit says that teachers in the private schools are not adequately qualified and work on low salaries without proper facilities. Yet, these schools give better results than government schools where teachers were well trained and have all the facilities. Edit says that government should ensure that all private schools work under the Education Department and action should be taken against unqualified and lazy teachers. (Baad-e-Shimal Edit)
