Philippines: Abu Sayyaf leader 'eliminated'
…
The leader of Abu Sayyaf, an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist organisation in the Philippines, has been killed during a shoot-out at the foot of Mount Tucay in the island of Jolo on Feb 21.
Albader Parad was among six Muslim rebels and one soldier killed in a shoot-out during a dawn raid by Philippines marines, the military authorities announced in Manila.
Abu Sayyaf – which means “bearer of the sword” in Arabic – has been fighting for the establishment of an independent Muslim state with direct funding from al-Qaeda and various Islamic charities. Apart from regular bombings, it has been targeting foreign tourists, aid workers and missionaries particularly the Americans.
Its major ‘success’ was attack in Feb 2004 of Super Ferry 14 – a passenger ferry going to Cagayan de Oro City from Manila. The ferry sank and all its 116 passengers and crew met with their watery grave.
This is not the first time though that the Manila authorities are claiming elimination of Parad who is known as ruthless killer. It was reported last July that Parad was killed during the group’s kidnapping of three Red Cross workers; the hostages were later freed and Parad resurfaced days later
